Protect Your Child's Teeth

At Cavitybusters Dentistry 4 Kids, we strive to help your kids have a healthy smile. Sometimes, this requires more intervention than brushing and flossing. Fortunately, we're also equipped for restorative techniques like fillings and preventative procedures like sealants.

Fillings help restore a tooth that has been afflicted by decay. A sealant, on the other hand, will add a protective layer to the tooth to prevent damage. These are two common dental procedures for children, and we perform them often at Cavitybusters Dentistry 4 Kids.

We will always consider what is best for you and your child before moving forward with either fillings or sealants. If you want to learn more or have concerns about your child's teeth, call us now. Our office is a welcoming place for kids of all ages, and we work hard to get to know you and your child. We are happy to work with your insurance, and we offer a new patient special.

Is your child having a dental emergency? Don't wait. We offer same-day and emergency appointments.

Restore Your Child's Teeth With Fillings

When your child has a cavity, the inside of their tooth is exposed. This can lead to pain and further decay or infection if left untreated. To prevent these problems, we use a filling to seal the cavity and protect your child's tooth. This is a restorative procedure since it restores the integrity of the tooth.

Traditionally, fillings were made from gold, porcelain, or composite. These materials are durable and strong, which is why they are still used for areas that need to hold up to extensive chewing like the back of the mouth. However, newer dental fillings are made from ceramic and plastic compounds or resins. These fillings look more natural, so they are used in more visible locations.

When picking a filling, we consider several factors.

  • Components of the filling material
  • Amount of remaining tooth structure
  • How and where the filling is placed
  • Chewing load of the tooth
  • Length and number of visits to prepare and adjust the restored tooth

These factors affect the durability, longevity, expense, and overall performance of the filling. We'll talk about all the options to find the best one for your child.

Choose the Best Filling for Your Child

In addition to the material, you want to understand the type of filling. In general, there are two types of fillings. We can talk about both options at Cavitybusters Dentistry 4 Kids.

Direct Fillings

Direct fillings are placed in a single visit without delay. This can include glass ionomers, resin ionomers, and composite or resin fillings. For a direct filling, the dentist will prepare the tooth, place the filling, and adjust it in a single appointment.

Indirect Fillings

For an indirect filling, your child will need two or more visits. This process may include inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns, and bridges. They may be made with gold, base metal alloys, composites, or ceramics. At the first visit, we'll prepare the tooth and make an impression of the area. We will temporarily cover the prepared tooth. The impression will be used to create the restoration. Then, at the next appointment, we will cement the filling and adjust it as needed.

Prevent Problems With Dental Sealants

Fillings may fix cavities, but sealants can help prevent them. For children, brushing is not always enough. With so many tight spots in the mouth, it can be difficult to reach all the nooks and crannies, especially for a child. This can lead to tooth decay. Sealants provide an added layer of protection to prevent cavities.

Sealants are made from plastic resin. The resin bonds and hardens on the deep grooves of the tooth's surface. Once the tooth is sealed, the grooves are smooth and less likely to collect plaque. Brushing becomes easier and more effective for your child with sealants.

At Cavitybusters Dentistry 4 Kids, we typically apply sealants after the permanent teeth have erupted. It is possible to seal baby teeth, but it's much less common. However, we know that every child is unique. We'll consider your child's needs to make the best recommendations about sealants.

Sealants can last from three to five years, but in some cases, they may last longer. The sealant is only effective when it is intact. If your child's sealant comes off, let us know. We'll schedule an appointment to get your child's tooth resealed for ongoing protection.
