Types of Dental Emergencies

During a dental emergency, things can get pretty hectic. You may feel scared or overwhelmed as you try to help your child. It's best to be prepared. Review this list of common emergencies to help.

Bitten Tongue or Lip

Everyone bites their lip and tongue from time to time. However, if the bite is severe enough to cause significant bleeding, clean the area with water and apply a cold compress. This compress can be a cold, wet towel or washcloth. Press it firmly against the area. This can reduce or avoid swelling. If you're still concerned, call us. We'd be happy to look at the injury to see how severe it is.

Object Caught in Teeth

Sometimes, objects can be stuck between your child's teeth. To remove them, try to use floss. Never use metal, plastic, or sharp tools to pick at the object. If the object can't be moved with dental floss, you can call our office for help.

Chipped, Broken, or Fractured Tooth

With a chipped, broken, or fractured tooth, start by rinsing your child's mouth with warm water. Then, a cold compress can reduce the swelling. If possible, find the tooth fragment and call us immediately.

Knocked Out Tooth

If your child has a tooth knocked out, act quickly. Find the tooth and rinse it with water. Don't use soap and try to touch only the crown and avoid the roots. Then, place the tooth in a clean container with milk. Call us as soon as possible or head to the hospital. In some cases, with fast action, it is possible to save the tooth and restore it.

Loose Tooth

It is normal for baby teeth to get loose. However, very loose teeth can be a danger. It's best to remove these teeth before they are swallowed or inhaled by accident. If the loose tooth is a permanent tooth, contact our office today for an immediate appointment.

Toothache

When your child has a toothache, it is important to take it seriously. Rinse their mouth out with water and inspect the area to make sure there's nothing stuck. If the pain doesn't go away, a cold compress can provide relief. Never apply heat, use aspirin, and apply topical pain relievers. This can cause damage to the gums. If needed, your child can use oral pain relievers. Then, schedule an appointment with us.

Broken Jaw

A broken jaw is a serious issue that should be treated by a doctor. The doctor can set the bone and do further tests to make sure there are no additional injuries to the head or face. Many broken jaws are caused by head injuries, which can be dangerous or life-threatening. However, if there are dental issues involved, you can also call us. We can help with your ongoing recovery and any restorations needed. While waiting to get your child to the doctor, use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Tips to Avoid Dental Injury

Dental injuries are scary, painful, and stressful. However, you can reduce your child's risk. Start by childproofing your home. This can help your child avoid dangerous falls. You should also watch what they eat. Foods like ice, popcorn kernels, and other hard snacks can cause damage.

In the car, always use seatbelts. For children who play sports, always get a specialized mouthguard. You can let Cavitybusters Dentistry 4 Kids create a custom-fitted mouthguard for your child.

Ultimately, good dental care is a great way to minimize emergencies. With regular brushing, flossing, and exams, your child's teeth can stay strong and healthy for years to come.

The dentist is amazing! My daughter didn't even know she was getting a shot. They distracted her the whole time, sang to her, and talked to her throughout the whole process.
